Amazon engaged anti-union consultants at a weekly price of as much as $20,000 every to work at its warehouses in Staten Island, New York, paperwork filed with the US Department of Labor recommend.

The consultants have been “engaged to represent the interests of Amazon relative to labor matters” on the firm’s  Staten Island services, based on an October 2021 letter from Amazon to Lev Labor, a consultancy that describes itself as specializing in “collective bargaining, union organizing campaigns and labor relations strategy and development.”

The presence of anti-union consultants had been famous by employees inside JFK8, an Amazon warehouse on Staten Island, which voted on April 1 to type the corporate’s first union. In leaked audio from a compulsory assembly contained in the warehouse, revealed by Vice in February 2021, a union avoidance guide advised employees that in the event that they unionized, pay negotiations with Amazon might begin as little as the minimal wage. The employer of this guide is not identified.

Amazon is now dealing with a swell of union organizing exercise. A union vote is because of be held at a neighboring Staten Island facility beginning on April 25. Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported {that a} warehouse in New Jersey had obtained sufficient employee signatures to carry a union election.

The October 2021 letter to Lev Labor from Amazon is accompanied by a “scope of work” doc from Lev Labor. This doc says Lev Labor’s “proposed intervention” is to offer Amazon with “three to five” on-site consultants, for no less than 5 days per week, to “interact directly” with Amazon staff. It says Lev Labor’s consultants would work together with employees by way of “meetings,” “walk-through’s,” and “focus groups.”

The estimated price per guide, per week can be “17k-20k,” at an hourly price of $400 per guide, the doc says.

Amazon and Lev Labor did not instantly reply to Insider’s requests for remark.

Lev Labor does not seem to have been the one firm engaged by Amazon to offer anti-union consultants. Documents held by the DOL spotlight a number of engagements since January 2021 between Amazon and 4 different consultancies.

Some of the paperwork relate to Amazon’s warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama. Workers on the Bessemer warehouse voted in opposition to unionizing in spring 2021, however the National Labor Relations Board on November ordered the election be re-held, saying Amazon had illegally tampered with the method.

The publicly-available DOL paperwork have been highlighted on Twitter by Terri Gerstein, a employees’ rights specialist and director of the State and Local Enforcement Project at Harvard Law School.

Gerstein mentioned the paperwork in all probability offered a snapshot of the form of cash Amazon spends on anti-union consultants, as not all consultancy corporations file types with the DOL.
